QUESTIONS ON FOOD CHIOCES AFTER OBESITY SURGERY

It is very important to adapt to nutrition after obesity surgery and understand it very well and to increase the success of surgery. We are aware that the words ‘Diet’ and ‘Dietitian’, sounds so unpleasant to especially the obesity surgery patients. Therefore, seeing our clinic as a school and seeing ‘sample menu’ as a nutritional list given to you and our dietician as a ‘nutrition consultant’ will make you feel better about this adaptation.
In order to adapt to the newly formed stomach volume after bariatric surgeries, eating portions, food choices and eating habits vary from beginning to end. The transition to all kind of foods should not be done at once but step by step. Especially in the post-op early period, we plan our menus mainly for protein of almost every meal.
In this article I will answer questions about what we should pay attention to while choosing nutrients and why we are limiting some foods.
When are we switching to which foods?
Actually this is a question worths writing a book as an answer. Generally speaking; it must be done in coordination with the nutrition consultant after the operation. You should know that we will not be able to consume food for a certain period of time. Especially in the third month, depending on the increase in our tolerance, we are switching to nuts, green leafy raw vegetables, legumes. By the 6th month we are reaching a wide range of cereals products. But we must not forget that we always use our priorities for protein!
How should caffeine consumption be?
Food containing caffeine is a diuretic. So they throw out the water that exists in our bodies. At the same time, caffeine may cause gastric ulcers or gastritis, which can lead to increased gastric acid. For this reason, we restrict postoperative caffeine intake. Patients suffering especially from water intake should pay more attention to this restriction.
Why are not the acid drinks consumed?
We aim to completely remove the acidic drinks from the patients’ lives after surgery. We should always consider the possibility that the gas you drink after you consume the acidic drinks will free up inside the stomach and enlarge the stomach and damage the stomach and cause health problems like ulcers. If we think that most of the acidic drinks contain high sugar and additives, it is inevitable to prevent weight loss.
